Abstract
Internship is a period when medical students take their first step as a physician and directly participate in medical practice. Investigating the empathic capacity of interns, which serves as a bridge between medical students and residents, may help understand the changes in empathic capacity as the training continues. Among 154 interns working for
four university hospitals, 122 answered the questionnaire packages including socio-demographic data, Jefferson Scale
of Empathy HP-version Korean edition (JSE-HP-K), and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). There were no significant
differences in JSE-HP-K and MBI scores for sex, marriage and offspring. However, those with no siblings had higher depersonalization subscale of MBI scores than those with more than 2 siblings. There was a negative correlation between
JSE-HP-K scores and emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscale of the MBI, while there was a positive correlation between JSE-HP-K scores and personal accomplishment subscale of the MBI. These results suggest that interns¡¯ empathic capacity might be influenced by burnout condition.
